12”x18”

This piece was a collaboration with the incredibly talented Nyia Luna, who I had the joy of meeting over the summer on multiple occasions, and we have previously collaborated before this! The heavy amount of gold in the piece is because Nyia translates to made of gold, from the Chibcha indigenous tribe of Colombia, and was born in the year of the golden dragon - 2000.

Her Papi, Dr. Tomas Garrett-Rosas was a graffiti artist back in the day - TJ Swan. When her Papi transitioned by suicide she searched through his archives. She found a dragon design he drew for an art class at Milwaukee Area Technical College back in the 90’s. Through this collab she wanted to emphasize the importance of prioritizing rest and letting “strong people” take a break. Even though her Papi is not here physically, she is now the caretaker for him by celebrating his art through her own artistic journey.
